Still pencil is the BEST!!

Well I thought of writing this post because of the few incidents I came across these days. Due to the advent of some 3d modelling and visualisation softwares like 3dsmax, maya and archiCAD people have started to design using these as their primary medium, they have literally forgotten the paper and pencil. Many famous designers around the world still prefer pencil as their primary design medium and later using computer simulations and applications as their secondary medium....People think pencil sketching is a waste of time and much more manual labour, well.....its true to a certain extent still using computers to start a design from a scratch may hamper your creativity to a large extent and restricts your mind and graphic co-ordination. Pencil or pen is a must for graphical thinking... Anyways I found this tool Google SketchUp software quiet an useful tool in the preliminary design stage, when your building's form and concept development are in process. You can use the software to feel the virtual environment and built space....But still pencil to me is the best!!
Cheers:)

Well, I think it depends very much on what kind of person you are and what design task you work on. I absolutely agree that a pencil is a tool that should not be underestemated. If someone is good in using it, the result of a pencil made sketch can be much better and vivid compared to a though realistic, very often quite cold 3 d computer visualisation. For example one nearly always recognise a visualisation made by archicad. It's an easy software, but not the most individual one. That's why I think pencil sketches will have a comeback sooner or later... at least for certain projects...
On the other hand... me for example, I am not very good in hand drawings. I do my first sketches on paper, but switch very fast to the computer then. Especially since in university we hardly design "simple boxes" which are easy to sketch, but rather difficult shapes which are difficult (at least for me) to picture correctly. So my results using a software are better than using a pencil. (Unfortunately my exams in two months have to be drawn by hand only... guess I have to practice again...)
Still... I admire people who have the ability to draw by hand and show exactly what they have in mind!

Thats true...Even i feel there should be a blend of both manual and computer while designing...It is definitely not necessary that a person should be good at sketches, but definitely good enough to express his/her thoughts visually and clearly, definitely u got softwares to improvise on ur thoughts...All the best for ur uni exams>>>
